About This Spot
Stepping into Mother Tongue Cafe & Bar feels like crossing into a warmly curated neighborhood haven where ease and quiet energy effortlessly mingle. Nestled on a sunny stretch of 41st Street in Oakland, the space welcomes both early risers seeking their morning ritual and those looking to settle in for a leisurely afternoon. Here, the pace is unhurried and approachable—music hums softly in the background, keeping conversation lively without overpowering the senses.
The atmosphere carries a gentle artistic pulse, hinting at a community-minded spirit that invites you to stay a little longer, whether to catch up with friends or dive into focused work. Comfortable indoor seating blends smoothly with fresh air and sunlight spilled across the outdoor tables, offering pockets of calm where each visitor finds their own rhythm.
At the heart of this experience is a thoughtful menu that balances familiar comforts with unexpected delights. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans creates an inviting warmth that pairs effortlessly with their nuanced espresso drinks—from the silky cortado to the vibrant Gibraltar. Meanwhile, pastries and savory bites bring a touch of old-world charm and local creativity, where rich flavors like manchego paired with chorizo, or delicate mochi donuts, quietly steal the spotlight without commanding it.
Mother Tongue’s genuine hospitality shines through subtle details: the friendly, knowledgeable staff, the attentive balance of buzz and stillness, and even the presence of resident cats that add a layer of soft spontaneity to the scene. It’s a place where you feel both part of something and comfortably yourself—one of those rare neighborhood spots that doesn’t simply serve food and drink but offers a small, flavorful corner of connection.

A great neighborhood third space that's open decent hours, 7am-7pm. Great vibe, music not too loud and still good for work and friends catch-up.

Mother Tongue Coffee Roasters is one of those rare finds that feels both approachable and extraordinary at the same time. From the moment you step in, the space carries an artistic, community-focused vibe that immediately sets it apart from your typical coffee shop. It’s warm, welcoming, and filled with the comforting aroma of freshly roasted beans. What truly makes Mother Tongue shine is their dedication to sourcing and roasting coffee with care. Every cup feels intentional. I tried both their pour-over and a flat white on separate visits, and each drink highlighted the unique flavor profiles of their beans—bright, complex, and beautifully balanced. Their single-origin options are especially impressive, showcasing the diversity of regions and farms they partner with. It’s coffee that not only tastes amazing but also tells a story. The staff is equally memorable. They’re passionate, approachable, and eager to share their knowledge without being pretentious. Whether you’re a casual coffee drinker or someone who loves diving into the details of origin and process, they make the experience enjoyable and engaging. Another thing I love about Mother Tongue is their commitment to inclusivity and community. It’s not just about serving coffee—it’s about creating a space where people feel connected and inspired. Between the exceptional drinks, the thoughtful mission, and the friendly atmosphere, Mother Tongue Coffee Roasters is a place you’ll want to return to again and again.

Fun neighborhood cafe with incredible coffee and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They have a ton of coffee drink options and non coffee with brunch options as well. The coffee is simply amazing, you can’t go wrong ordering here.

Very fun artistic, progressive atmosphere, and packed, even on a late Monday morning! My cappuccino was very smooth. I'll definitely be back to try the pour-over and pick up some beans for holiday gifting.
